A primetime speaking stage. We'll start with the midday breaking news. The inspector general for the Department of Homeland Security is investigating the Secret Service's security response after a gunman attempted to assassinate former President Trump on Saturday. The director of the Secret Service faces a series of questions today about how the gunman had a clear line of sight to Trump at the Pennsylvania rally. Previously, Director Kimberly Cheadle had said that local law enforcement was responsible for the building where the 20-year-old climbed onto the roof and opened fire on Trump. But now she told CNN that her agency is solely responsible for the implementation and enforcement of security at the rally. So the Secret Service respects local law enforcement and we can't investigate or do our protection mission without them. At that particular site. We divided the areas of responsibility, but the Secret Service is solely responsible for the design and implementation and execution of the site. And what I was trying to emphasize is that we just divided the areas of responsibility, and they supported those areas of responsibility, Cheadle said. No agency assets were diverted from the rally, even though there were other events in the state that day that required agency protection. Meanwhile, President Joe Biden had already ordered an independent investigation. Now, that high-speed car chase in Greensboro ended in a crash involving a police patrol car. Here's a video of that scene, filmed overnight on Walker Avenue. Kelly Kendall joins us live this afternoon. Kelly, how many people were involved in this crash? Audrey. Four people. One of them was a Greensboro police officer who was involved in a crash this morning near 215th. It all started when a GPD officer attempted a traffic stop after spotting a car going the wrong way on East Lake Drive at West Market Street. Police said they suspected the driver was intoxicated and drove off at a high rate of speed. Police pursued the car, but the pursuit ended when the car collided with one of the patrol cars. The crash involved three people in the suspect vehicle and one officer. I spoke with a man who lives along Walker Avenue and he said he was woken up by a loud crash. Another neighbor said he heard a commotion, went outside and saw over a dozen police cars and a smoky accident scene right after it happened. We could see the damage, but it was still smoky and chaotic at that point. And, you know, it was low light everywhere. So it was hard to see very well. But we knew that only half of the car was left. Then, six hours later, I saw the car up close when the tow truck went by and it literally looked like someone had cut the car in half. He also said he saw people outside the car getting CPR. Three people have life-threatening injuries and one person is seriously injured, according to Guilford County EMS. The Greensboro Police Department and the North Carolina Highway Patrol are investigating the accident in Greensboro. This is Kelly Kendall with WXII 12 News. Heat advisories are actually in effect east of us, and they haven't reached most of the Wilkesboro visibility area. Chatham Orange County, Moore County, and all of the east side until 8 tonight. Still, it will be hot and humid this afternoon. You can see it on the satellite image. Not many clouds at this time. I checked the radar, but nothing shows up until we're offshore. We've got some rain and storms along the coast of the Southern Outer Banks at this time, but it may lighten up a little later. There's a chance of showers and storms this afternoon, but temperatures are still hot with low to mid 90s Fahrenheit in the foothills and mountains of the Piedmont. Showers and storms are more likely with low 80s Fahrenheit. That's why we're calling today an “impact day.” At a marginal risk of level 1, there's a chance of storms, some of which could be strong and severe. We'll continue to give you updates this afternoon.
