TRIAD CW starts now and will continue this morning's breaking news. Authorities say former President Donald Trump is safe. After a man opened fire at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania, the FBI identified the shooter as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks from Pennsylvania. Many supporters of the former president gathered near his Mar-a-Lago mansion overnight, carrying American flags and Trump signs. One spectator was killed and another was wounded. The shooter also died. Elected leaders from both parties have condemned the attack and are offering their thoughts and prayers to the former president. Alice Barr reports from Milwaukee, which will host the Republican National Convention next week. Former President Trump is back at his Bedminster, New Jersey, home and safe after a frightening moment at a rally in Butler County, Pennsylvania, this evening. There has been a so-called assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump. Former President Trump wrote on Truth Social that he was hit by a bullet above his right ear. The bullets went pop, pop, pop, pop. I couldn't see anything. So I turned around to look at President Trump, and he was down. The shooter was neutralized and is now deceased, according to the U.S. Secret Service. One audience member was killed and two were seriously injured. The Secret Service said the gunman fired several shots from an elevated position outside the secured rally venue. A loud explosion rang out moments after the former president began speaking just after 6 p.m. He collapsed on the platform behind the podium, hands reaching for his ear, as Secret Service agents rushed to the stage and surrounded him. Blood could be seen running from his right ear, down his cheek and toward his mouth. He raised his fist toward the crowd and was rushed to a waiting SUV. Former President Trump thanked the police and offered condolences to those killed and injured. President Biden addressed the nation. “There is no place in America for violence like this. This is sick, this is sick. This is one of the reasons our country must come together as members of Congress and Americans of both parties pray for healing and peace.” Following Vice President Kamala Harris' remarks, she released a statement that said in part, “Doug and I are relieved that he is not seriously injured.” We are praying for him, his family, and all those injured and affected by this senseless shooting. We thank the United States Secret Service emergency responders and local authorities for their swift action, and multiple state legislators spoke out after yesterday's attack. Sen. Thom Tillis tweeted, “This was a heinous assassination attempt and I am grateful that President Trump is safe.” Please continue to pray for those who were shot. Violence in our political system will never be tolerated. Republican Sen. Phil Berger also tweeted, and I quote, that he was praying for President Trump and our country. North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper also posted, and I quote, that violence will have no place in our politics or communities.I appreciate the quick response of law enforcement today and hope that former President Trump is not seriously injured. Also, former Congressman Mark Walker has spoken out in response to the shooting. Walker has been the faith-building adviser for the Trump campaign at the Republican National Committee since March. He says he's heading to Milwaukee for the Republican National Convention, but he expects security at the convention to be stepped up. There will be a commotion on the floor when President Trump comes out of the hall on Thursday evening to accept the nomination. There will be a commotion on the floor. His base has been drawn to him more and more and has come to appreciate him even more. And when he says, “Look, I'm a target, and we're watching this happen today,” I think that's really emboldening for himself and his supporters to continue to fight as he's asking us to, and we're going to continue to monitor this developing story with updates both on air and online. And Brian Slocum, I want to say good morning this morning. And I want to say what the weather is going to be like for those of you who just woke up today for us. Well, good morning, Star.We start with a live video from North Carolina A&T State University, where it's a little muggy and blue skies. There were some clouds earlier, but the temperature is starting to drop to 77 degrees, with a 5 dew west-southwest wind. In some places, it's in the 70s. It's going to be another muggy day. It's already feeling like 79 degrees near PTI Airport. Sunday is going to be sweltering hot. Highs are expected to reach the mid-90s today and get even hotter on Monday and Tuesday. It's hard to imagine expecting the extreme weather to flip a little bit later in the weekend, with more chances for a different kind of extreme weather and rain, and more mild weather and more chances of rain. This has started to happen since yesterday. The high at PTI Airport was 93 degrees on Sunday afternoon. At least all over the east side of the mountains, it was in the 90s yesterday and temperatures are warming up. We're not quite at 80 yet, but we're on the verge of hitting 79 in Winston-Salem. Even at this early hour. It's going to be a nice day to hang out by the pool. There will be a lot of people in the water trying to beat the heat. By mid-afternoon, it'll be around 94 on the way up to a high of 95. If you're hoping for rain, it's pretty limited. At least in the short term. But there could be a few showers and storms in the area. There is a heat watch just east of the area. It doesn't include our local county today, but those counties will probably be added to the heat watch expected Monday and Tuesday. It hasn't been issued yet, but we think it will probably cover Montgomery County, Randolph-Alamance County. But we'll have to wait and see how that plays out. Watch the heat this week. We'll get some much-needed rain later this week, but it will probably linger.
