The presidential primary season is over, but lower-level primaries are still taking place across the country. Candidates will vote in five states on Tuesday: South Carolina, Nevada, Maine, North Dakota and Ohio, plus a special House election in Ohio.
Rep. Bill Johnson retired in January from Ohio's 6th Congressional District, and State Senator Michael Rulli, the Republican candidate for that district, will face off against Democratic candidate Michael L. Krypchak. Former President Donald J. Trump carried the district by 29 percentage points in 2020.
Here are some notable primaries:
President Trump's running mate, Nancy Mace, is running in South Carolina.
Trump's running mate, Republican Rep. Nancy Mace of South Carolina, is facing off in the primary against a candidate backed by former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, who is running against Mace after McCarthy voted to oust her as speaker last year. The primary, in South Carolina's 1st Congressional District, comes just days after the House Ethics Committee launched an investigation into Mace's use of congressional expense assistance programs.
Mace's opponent, Katherine Templeton, worked for Nikki Haley when she was governor of South Carolina and Templeton ran for that office in 2018. Mace was once a moderate ally of Haley but moved to the MAGA wing of the Republican Party when the district was redistricted in 2022 to become more conservative.
Republican primaries will also be hotly contested in the 3rd and 4th Congressional Districts. Rep. Geoff Duncan is retiring from the conservative 3rd District, and in the 4th District, Rep. William R. Timmons IV, who beat a Republican challenger in the 2022 primary, is being challenged by Rep. Adam Morgan, the leader of the far-right Freedom Caucus in the district.
The leading Republican Senate candidate in Nevada received a last-minute endorsement from President Trump.
Nevada Republicans will select a candidate for a U.S. Senate seat in a crowded field.
Front-runner Sam Brown, a former Army captain, received a last-minute boost in the form of an endorsement from Trump, who spoke about the race on Sunday night even though early voting had ended.
Still, the endorsement solidifies Brown as the favorite to take on incumbent Democratic Sen. Jacky Rosen in November. Brown also has the backing of the state's Republican governor, Joe Lombard, and has raised more money than any other candidate in the race.
Brown will face off against Jeff Gunter, a wealthy dermatologist who served as Trump's ambassador to Iceland, Jim Merchant, who has supported Trump's lies that the 2020 election was stolen from him, and a number of other minor candidates.
Two North Dakota Republicans are vying to replace Gov. Doug Burgum.
North Dakota's Republican governor, Doug Burgum, ran an unsuccessful, self-financed presidential campaign and is now the leading candidate to be Trump's running mate, but he is not seeking a third term as governor. On Tuesday, two Republicans will face off to succeed Burgum.
One of them, Rep. Kelly Armstrong, has served in North Dakota's only House seat since 2019 and led the House investigation into President Biden's son, Hunter. Armstrong will face off against Lt. Gov. Tammy Miller, who was appointed by Burgum last year and has the governor's support.
The winner will face Democratic state Sen. Merrill Piepkorn in November. Burgum defeated his Democratic opponent by 42 points in 2020.
The Maine Republican Party will select a challenger for Rep. Jared Golden.
Maine Democratic Rep. Jared Golden faces a tough re-election race in the state's rural 2nd Congressional District, and Republicans will have to choose between two candidates vying to give him an extra vote in this year's general election.
Former NASCAR driver Austin Theriault is running against Rep. Michael Soboleski, who has been endorsed by Trump, who called on his supporters to back Theriault on the eve of the election.
