Slovakia's populist Prime Minister Roberto Fico was injured in Wednesday's attack, according to the country's president.
Local media reported that Fico was shot and wounded in the city of Handlova, where he was meeting with supporters.
President Zuzana Caputova condemned what she described as a “brutal and reckless attack”.
“I'm in shock,” she wrote in a Facebook message. “We hope that Robert Fico will do a lot to recover from the attack at this critical moment.”
The extent of Fico's injuries was not immediately known. There was no immediate comment from the prime minister's office or police.
Fico is a veteran politician who has aligned himself with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán in opposing aid to Ukraine and challenging mainstream opinion within the European Union.
