According to the Department of Adult Corrections, 40-year-old David Gunther was found unconscious in his cell at Bertie Correctional Facility at 3:30 this morning. Investigators say Gunther's death appears to be a suicide. Gunther was convicted of habitual felony assault in May 2020.

Gunther was scheduled to be sentenced in May 2023 for habitual felony assault and released in November 2028. The North Carolina Department of Adult Corrections said David Gunther was found unconscious in his cell at Bertie Correctional Facility around 3:30 a.m. Friday. Investigators believe Gunther took his own life.
Gunter was scheduled to be sentenced on the habitual felony charge in May 2023 and released in November 2028.
