Democrats annoy Republicans by calling them “wackos.” The name is so appropriate that it cuts. JD Vance has claimed that the Democratic Party is run by “childless catty women” who regret their life choices and want to make everyone else miserable. That's pretty weird.
One faction of the party claims Democrats are involved with an international child sexual trafficking ring. A North Carolina man shoots up a pizza parlor in a fictitious rescue mission. The rest of the party just shrugs. This is weird.
The party that impeached Bill Clinton for lying about his affair is now He likens a man who paid a porn star to cover up an affair while sexually assaulting another woman to Jesus Christ. (Obviously, that's not the Jesus of the Bible, but a white Jesus.) Just some really weird stuff.
Following the January 6th attack on the Capitol, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, Senator Lindsey Graham, and many other Republican leaders accused Donald Trump of inciting the attack, yet they still supported Trump in this year's presidential election, which is rather odd.
The party that championed free markets, free trade, and literally went to war to spread democracy in the Middle East is now backing a presidential candidate who wants to close borders, impose sweeping tariffs, withdraw from NATO, and embrace the world's most brutal dictator.
That's really strange isn't it?
But North Carolina has a truly bizarre Republican: Republican gubernatorial candidate Mark Robinson blames unplanned pregnancies on women who “won't let their skirts fly.”[s] He has also alluded to Holocaust denial and called members of the LGBT+ community “filth”. Just a few weeks ago, he told a church meeting: “Some people have to be killed.” He received a standing ovation from the audience. I grew up Anglican and that was pretty strange to me.
Robinson is a con man with little experience in anything he does and a history of financial mismanagement. He's declared bankruptcy three times and was even evicted from his home for not paying rent. A company run by Robinson and his wife is under investigation for allegedly defrauding the government by applying for subsidies for childcare centers that never applied for or received them. The company paid Robinson and his family more than $850,000 over a seven-year period. The Department of Health and Human Services ordered the company to pay more than $132,000 in restitution. No Republican has accused Robinson of wrongdoing, a historical oddity.
So as not to lose, Republican candidate for public schools superintendent Michelle Morrow called public schools “indoctrination centers” and “socialist centers.” She called for the public execution of Democrats like Joe Biden, Barack Obama and Roy Cooper, spread the lie that Obama was a Muslim and promoted the idea that Chinese troops were stationed in Canada and preparing to invade the US when Biden took office. This is not only bizarre, it's stupid.
But you know what's really strange? Michelle Morrow and Mark Robinson both won their primaries against regular people. In Mark Robinson's case, he won by a landslide, getting nearly two-thirds of the vote, against the sitting state treasurer and a wealthy lawyer. Morrow beat an incumbent running for reelection who, by most standards, had done a decent job. A majority of the Republican Party chose two delusional, insane people to be their standard-bearers in the general election, and the party establishment welcomed them. How can that not be strange?
But what is strangest is that people who once appeared to have values and beliefs have been replaced by a band of con artists, conspiracy theorists and charlatans. Once-honorable men and women now routinely advocate lies and corruption in the pursuit of power. In just eight years, a major political party has been transformed into something that resembles a cross between a religious cult and an organized crime syndicate.
Well, weird is a pretty accurate description of the modern Republican Party.
