WATCH: Heavy rain expected this weekend, severe storms threaten for North Carolina on Saturday
Heavy rain possible, severe storms possible Saturday and late Sunday afternoon
Wow. She's taking up a lot of the parking lot. Yes, she's taking up a lot. He saw her. If she's just drifting, will that happen? Is it not raining that much this weekend? It's not raining that much. But when it is, it feels like it. And there's a lot of runoff because the ground is very dry in a lot of areas. Some of you saw some pretty heavy rain in the Southern Piedmont, especially in Randolph County and north Montgomery today. There was actually a flash flood warning there. A flood watch is in effect for Wilkes County again tonight. These areas are experiencing slow moving storms with very heavy rain, 2-3 inches. There's also a lot of lightning in these storms. The green areas show areas where there is a flood concern at this time. But we expect it to get worse overnight. We're starting to see some heavy rain coming in from the Charlotte area. It's a slow moving storm right now. The heavy rain concentrated in Wilkes County is 2-3 inches per hour, with thunderstorms in some areas, and the center is reaching as far south as 4-5 tonight, increasing runoff. Of course, stream and river flooding and road pooling could also be an issue in low-lying areas. So be careful. Hydroplaning could occur not just tonight, but tomorrow as well. Heavy rain is possible Saturday and Sunday. Rainfall totals 1.48 inches in Greensboro. Some of it fell overnight. A tenth of an inch at the Asheboro airport, but that's about it. 2-3 inches, some 4-5 inches. That's near Allred in north Montgomery. Okay. Heavy rain in places, but not necessarily where we need it. There's a good chance of water pooling in the foothills. That's where we can use it in Winston-Salem, west. On our way to Yadkinville, especially where we've been concerned about extreme drought over the last 48 hours, the east side is doing pretty well. We need to start accumulating snow to the west side. It's moving in a little bit now. Temperatures are in the 70s in Mount Airy from Ararat to Stewart. Tomorrow morning we will be in the upper 60s, comfortably warm and very humid. Highs today are 87 in Winston-Salem and Burlington. That's about right for this time of year, or maybe a little lower. Still feeling gross. Dew points in the 70s so it feels like it's in the 90s. Same for tomorrow. Highs are around 84, but we are seeing scattered showers and thunderstorms along the front. The front is moving back and forth a little bit through the area today. That's one of the reasons we're seeing some very heavy rainfall. There is an area of low pressure over the surface. Strong flow will come in from the south and west-southwest tomorrow, and the Piedmont Triad area will see some localized severe thunderstorms after 2:00. Thunderstorms will continue through the evening, but some people may not see as much. Rain and storms seem to be widespread and scattered. We are optimistic that heavy rain will fall in areas that need it. However, severe weather is possible in the eastern foothills. There may also be scattered storms starting tomorrow around 11:00 AM. Intermittent showers are likely in the mountain areas. Also, heavy rain may start in the morning and continue through the afternoon, with a high chance of thunderstorms as the sun sets. Here's what the weather forecast is saying. The overnight hourly forecast shows moisture moving up from parts of the Charlotte region and rain, with heavy downpours expected in the Northern Piedmont region until around 8:09 AM. Also, rain is starting to fall in the mountains and foothills as well as around Winston, Central and the Triad. However, a little later, there is a good chance of heavy showers and storms, and the question is how unsettled the weather will be if it doesn't rain as much. With the clouds remaining, we may just get some heavy rain. I would prefer that over severe weather. But we'll keep an eye on it to see if that changes by Sunday. There may be some sunshine and the temperatures may be a little warmer. Precipitation in the South. We'll see temperatures. Yeah. We'll see 2 to 4 inches of precipitation. This is where the drought concerns are really. And where we're hoping for rain. There's a risk of severe thunderstorms all day tomorrow. And a threat of high winds. Those are the main concerns. Here's the 7 day forecast. 84 degrees for you guys in the Triad, 86 degrees on Sunday, two days in a row that will impact you. Showers and thunderstorms will continue for most of next week. Temperatures will be in the mid to high 80s with a risk of a few thunderstorms each day.
