In a show of party unity, delegates to the state convention pledged to endorse Vice President Kamala Harris for the Democratic presidential nomination, more than enough delegates to secure the party's nomination.
Harris likely has more support than these statements suggest: Many delegates have said they will vote for her, but not all states are acting in unison.
State party endorsements account for 70 percent of the 3,949 delegates who will cast their first ballot at the convention. In addition, there are unpledged delegates, known as superdelegates, who will only vote if no candidate receives a majority on the first ballot.
State party endorsements are not binding and do not necessarily mean that individual delegates have to vote for Harris. Party rules allow delegates who previously pledged to support Biden to vote for any candidate now that he has dropped out of the race.
