Stein, Robinson raise millions for North Carolina gubernatorial race, Democrats lead in fundraising

North Carolina's gubernatorial race has attracted millions of dollars in donations and spending, but in recent months Attorney General Josh Stein has raised far more money than Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson in one of the most closely watched races this term.
Races for lieutenant governor, attorney general and public school superintendent are among the well-funded races and campaign fundraising is booming.
Stein, a Democrat, raised $13,792,245 in the quarter from Feb. 18 to June 30, by far the most of any statewide candidate in North Carolina for that period as Democrats seek to hold on to the presidency. [Read more…]

More money is flowing into the campaign coffers of candidates in North Carolina's 1st Congressional District than any other congressional race in the state.
This is the state's most competitive House race. The district covers most of northeastern North Carolina.
Incumbent Democratic U.S. Rep. Don Davis, who is seeking a second term, is the only House candidate to raise seven figures in the second quarter, raising just over $1 million. [Read more…]

MILWAUKEE — Donald Trump, in an extraordinary acceptance speech for the presidential nomination on Thursday, the fourth and final day of the Republican National Convention, detailed the attempted assassination of him last weekend at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania.
“I'm going to tell you exactly what happened. You'll never hear this story from me again, because it hurts too much to tell,” Trump said publicly for the first time about the shooting that left one rally attendee dead and two wounded. North Carolina State Board of Elections approves new party, clears Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to run

The North Carolina State Board of Elections has voted to recognize an alternative political party, We the People, allowing presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to appear on North Carolina's ballot in November.
The committee voted along party lines to reject Cornel West's alternative party, Justice for All, by a 3-2 vote. Democrats rejected Justice for All's attempt to become the official party, in part due to questions about petition signatures. [Read more...]

A new state-by-state scorecard on women's health released this week by the Commonwealth Fund is raising concerns about the care women receive and the ripple effects of a 2022 Supreme Court decision to overturn CEDAW. Roe v. Wade.
The 2024 Women's Health and Reproductive Health State Scorecard is based on 32 indicators about state health care systems and examines how state policy actions are changing how women access and use health care.
“Based on the evidence and the data, one thing is clear: women's health is at a critical point of vulnerability,” Joseph Betancourt, president of the Commonwealth Fund, said at a press conference on Wednesday. [Read more…]
North Carolina Consumer Wins Lawsuit Against Nation's Largest Debt Purchaser

The North Carolina Justice Center has received final court approval for a $5.75 million settlement in a class action lawsuit against Portfolio Recovery Association (PRA), one of the nation's largest debt purchasers.
The lawsuit, filed in 2016, alleges that PRA violated North Carolina debt collection laws by obtaining default judgments against debtors without providing “sufficient evidence proving the claimed debt.” [Read more…]
