A 21-year-old soldier from Fort Liberty died while washing his car, according to a North Carolina sheriff's office.
This is breaking news. We'll have breaking news for you at 4 p.m. The now former head of human resources for the state Department of Revenue, who was arrested in California, will be off duty tonight. A spokesperson for the department confirmed in the afternoon that Harlan Frye was arrested this month in Long Beach, California. According to Long Beach police, he attempted to meet online with someone he thought was a minor for lewd purposes. A person posing as a minor reported him to the police. Harlan, who lives in Greensboro, is currently facing charges there. According to the California Department of Taxation, Harlan's employment ended the day after his arrest, but he did not say whether he was fired or resigned. Harlan had held the position since April 2022. The cause of the standoff in Davidson County Vineyards yesterday was discovered. One man died in the incident. Officers believe it was a suicide. Sheriff Richie Simmons said it started with a call from a woman about domestic violence. Joshua Davis is following the case and has more details. They tried to resolve it peacefully, but it didn't work. Davidson County sheriff's deputies say they arrived at Grape Escape Vineyards on Bethesda Road late Monday night. Sheriff Richie Simmons said one of the owners, Neil Thomas, fired at deputies, who returned fire and shot him in the hand. He ran inside the house and a standoff ensued for a while. Well, we didn't know what condition he was in, but we heard gunfire inside the house. Steele Thomas' wife initially called 911 about the domestic violence situation and was able to get to safety. Deputies gave Thomas directions for several hours, eventually dispatching the sheriff's emergency response team. They saw the suspect commit suicide inside the house. The suspect had also shot four dogs that were there. Four Great Danes were also dead. Those were dogs that were inside the house. No deputies were injured during the response. Sheriff Simmons said he did his best to resolve it peacefully. We tried to investigate it the best way we could and come out better. But still, all of our deputies walked away unscathed, as did the victim. He has a message for people who have experienced domestic violence. It seems like these types of incidents are on the rise. Get real help. We can help that way. But, but, don't let it end like this. That's it, Joshua Davis reports for Grape Escape Vineyards, who issued a statement asking for privacy during this tough time. The SBI is reviewing the actions of these deputies. The deputies involved are currently on administrative leave during this standoff. Sheriff Simmons, however, did not say how many. The shooter who killed five people at a Colorado LGBTQ nightclub has pleaded guilty to 50 federal hate crimes. Anderson Lee Aldrich is already serving a life sentence for the attack after pleading guilty to state charges last year. Federal prosecutors are focused on proving the attack at Club Q was planned and fueled by bias. A federal plea deal allows Aldrich to avoid the death penalty. Nineteen other people were injured in the 2022 attack in High Point. Police arrested man after assault and barricade. Officers took William Sykes into custody Sunday, three hours after he barricaded himself in a home on Brentwood Avenue. Officers were dispatched to the home after a woman called police to say Sykes had threatened her with a gun. Hours earlier, Sykes had assaulted the woman and damaged her car, officers said. Officers said Sykes is a convicted felon who was arrested last year on assault charges and is accused of robbing multiple postal workers in Greensboro and Charlotte. According to Greensboro police, officers took four people into custody yesterday after a traffic stop and a short pursuit: Jason Harrington, Ty Juan Cross, Shawn Clark and Deonte Overby. The four men are suspected of robbing two postal workers in Greensboro yesterday, one at the intersection of Glenwood Avenue and Haywood Street. None of the victims were injured, officers said. One of the suspects, Jason Harrington, reportedly accidentally shot himself during the pursuit.
