Firefighters on Maui were battling to put out smaller blazes on the island on Wednesday, one year after a devastating blaze that killed more than 100 people.
The Maui County Fire Department said the fire was in a deep ravine and two helicopters were using water to try to contain it. By 6 p.m., the department said the blaze was under control, but firefighters would remain on scene to “continue to fight the fire.”
Maui Emergency Management had earlier ordered evacuations for homes in Akalani Loop and Kalialani Circle. The orders were lifted after the fire was contained, but it was not immediately clear how many people and homes were affected.
