That ended a streak of four straight walk-off wins in the College World Series. Texas A&M beat Florida, 3-2, in a game that started more than four hours later than scheduled because of weather delays and played past 1 a.m. in Omaha.
Still, the Gators and Aggies had plenty of drama late in the game.
A&M relief pitcher Evan Aschenbach got out of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the eighth when a shovel ball by Kayden Kent to first baseman Ted Burton narrowly beat the baserunner after Dale Thomas grounded out to second base.
Aschenbach returned to the mound in the top of the ninth and gave up a one-out single to Michael Robertson. Cade Kurland hit a fly ball onto the warning track in right field that Jace Laviolette caught with his arms outstretched above the yellow home run barrier. Florida All-American Jack Caglianon walked and Ashton Wilson struck out.
The first round playoffs are over, with Virginia facing Florida State in the final on Sunday at 1pm CST, followed by North Carolina facing Tennessee at 6pm.
On Monday, NC State will play Florida in the finals, while Kentucky will face Texas A&M.
