MORGANTOWN, WV – The West Virginia University baseball team is scheduled to play the University of North Carolina in the NCAA Super Regional at Bryson Field at Boshamer Stadium in Chapel Hill. The best-of-three series will begin at 6 p.m. on Friday, June 7. Saturday's game will start at 8 p.m. and Sunday's game will start at 3 p.m. if necessary.
The entire series will be broadcast on ESPN2 with play-by-play commentary by Mike Monaco and Kyle Peterson, and on the Mountaineer Sports Network with Andrew Caridi and Jake Weghorst, all radio affiliates, as well as on the Varsity Network, the WVU Gameday App and WVUSports.com.
The Mountaineers qualified for this weekend's tournament by winning the Tucson Regional Tournament a week ago, defeating Dallas Baptist University and Grand Canyon University twice. The Tar Heels, seeded No. 4 in the nation, won the Chapel Hill Regional Tournament by beating Louisiana State University in overtime in the seventh game.
West Virginia improves to 36-22 overall this season and will be making its first Super Regional appearance in school history.
Senior Derek Clark He was named Tucson Regional Player of the Year after pitching a complete game in the season opener against Dallas Baptist and scoring the game-winning run with the final two outs against GCU. He will start Friday against UNC's Shea Sprague.
Junior JJ Weatherholt He led the team with a .345 batting average, hit eight home runs and had 30 RBIs. Reed Chumley He recorded a team-high 15 home runs, 15 doubles, and 48 RBIs.
Coach Scott Forbes' North Carolina is 45-14 this season, including 35-3 at home.
Vance Honeycutt batted .309 with a team-high 24 home runs and 28 stolen bases. The center fielder was also named ACC Defensive Player of the Year.
Starting pitcher Shay Sprague was named to the All-ACC Second Team and has a 3-1 record with a 3.76 ERA and 58 strikeouts in 69.1 innings pitched.
