The US military announced Thursday that it had deleted the commander at Pitafik Base in Greenland, adding that it would not tolerate behaviour that violates President Trump's agenda.
The decision to remove Colonel Susanna Myers was announced in a US Space Force statement posted on social media by Pentagon chief spokesman Sean Parnell.
The statement did not cite any specific reasons for her removal, but Parnell said “actions to undermine the chain of command or overturn President Trump's agenda are not tolerated.”
Parnell's post included a link to an article by independent press agency Military.com. According to this, Colonel Meyers sent an email to Base Staff on March 28, distanced himself from JD Vance's visit.
Vance visited the base as part of Trump's push to take over Greenland, an island that is a semi-autonomous part of Denmark, for national security reasons.
“Commanders are expected to comply with the highest standards of conduct, especially as they are related to remaining independent in the performance of their duties,” the Space Force said in a statement.
Vance criticized Denmark in his remarks to Pituffik staff and accused the country of not spending enough money to keep the area safe. “This is not a way you talk to your close allies,” replied Danish Foreign Minister Lars Rocke Rasmussen.
On March 31, Colonel Myers emailed Pitafik staff, saying that the Trump administration concerns expressed by Vance did not reflect the views of the basic leaders.
Space Force confirmed that these excerpts were from emails sent throughout the base on March 31st.
In addition to US military personnel, private contractors from Greenland, Denmark and Canada also live and work in Pitafik (pronounced Beadoufik).
Colonel Myers became commander of the 821st Space Base Group, which runs Pituffik last July.
