GARNER, N.C. (WTVD) — Community members are in mourning after a mother and father were killed and a child was seriously injured in a crash in Garner on Monday.
The incident happened on U.S. Business 70 at Newland Road just before 1:30 p.m.
According to Garner Police, the three vehicles involved were a silver Chevrolet Trailblazer, a dark blue Mazda CX5 Select and a black Cadillac Escalade.
According to investigators, the Trailblazer was traveling west on U.S. 70 when it ran a red light and struck a Mazda traveling south on Newland Road.
The driver of the Mazda and a passenger, identified by police as Tyler Campbell, 28, and Susan Campbell, 29, were killed.
Eight-year-old Myles Campbell suffered life-threatening injuries and was taken to hospital in critical condition.
The driver of the Chevrolet Trailblazer, Jordan Alexander Porter, 25, of Garner, was also taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. He remained hospitalized Tuesday.
Porter was charged with DUI and police say more charges are expected.
The Escalade sustained minor damage, but none of the occupants were injured.
A portion of U.S. 70 was closed while police investigated. The road reopened just after 6:30 p.m.
A prayer vigil was planned for the Campbell family Tuesday night at Garner Baseball Stadium.
ABC11 reached out to Tyler Campbell's mother, who declined to speak officially but asked for prayers for Myles, who remained hospitalized in critical condition Tuesday.
It was not immediately clear whether she or other family members would attend the memorial.
Traffic violation history
According to court records obtained by ABC11, Porter has a long history of traffic violations.
The charges, which date back to 2015 and vary in severity, were dismissed in all but two cases. The circumstances of the dismissals were not immediately clear.
Porter was charged with and pleaded guilty to being under 21 and failing to maintain lane driving on New Year's Day 2018. He was convicted of running a red light in June 2015, when police said Monday he ran a red light. He had only received a speeding ticket last month for driving 21 mph over the speed limit, according to court records. The case is still pending.
ABC11 reached out to Porter's mother but did not hear back. ABC11 also reached out to Porter's wife, who declined to comment on Monday's fatal accident.
Garner police said additional charges are expected but that could take several days.
