The Trump administration has frozen more than $1 billion in funding for Cornell and more than $790 million for the Northwest in civil rights investigations into both schools, two administration officials said.
The funding suspension will primarily involve grants and contracts with departments of agriculture, defense, education, health and human services, officials who discussed the decision not announced on the condition of anonymity.
The move is the latest in a rapidly escalating campaign against the country's elite universities, with more than $3.3 billion in federal funds being suspended or cancelled. Other schools with frozen funds include Brown, Columbia, Harvard, Penn and Princeton.
Cornell and Northwestern representatives did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
