President Trump poured cold water into the idea of serving a third term. This is an idea that he was frequently teased but prohibited by the Constitution, and instead came to mind in an interview that aired Sunday as Vice President J.D. Vance or Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
In an interview, Trump said he was reluctant to be caught up in a debate about who could follow him, along with NBC's “Meet the Press,” but he called Vance “a fantastic and wonderful man” and “Rubio.” Trump added, “A lot of people are great,” but “I'm sure someone will say they're VP.
Trump often meditated on the idea for a third term, saying in March he “not kidding” about the possibility, suggesting there is a “way” to avoid the 22nd amendment. Last month, his family business began selling “Trump 2028” products – some added the phrase “rewrite the rules” to speculate.
On Sunday, interviewer Kristen Welker asked Trump about the product, and the president insisted that many people wanted him to seek another term before he could play the idea.
“That's something you're not allowed to do as far as I know,” he added.
“There are a lot of people selling hats for 2028, but this is not what I'm trying to do,” he said. “I have a great four years and want to hand it over to someone else. Ideally, I'm a great Republican.”
Trump added that four years were enough time to do something “really spectacular.”
