Flights were suspended at several major airports up the East Coast as thunderstorms moved through the region Wednesday night, causing delays of up to hours in the region and as far away as Chicago, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.
The airports serve the New York, Washington and Baltimore metropolitan areas. Much of the region was under severe thunderstorm watches or warnings through Wednesday night.
Departures into Newark, Kennedy and LaGuardia airports were suspended until Thursday at 1 a.m. After the ground suspension was lifted, departing flights at Newark and LaGuardia were delayed on average by about an hour.
Departing flights to Baltimore, Dulles and Reagan airports in the Washington area were suspended starting Wednesday night. Those ground suspensions were lifted around midnight.
There were no ground stops at Chicago O'Hare International Airport, Philadelphia International Airport, Tampa International Airport or Teterboro Airport, but flights departing from those airports were delayed an average of up to five hours on Wednesday night, the FAA said.
