HIGH POINT, N.C. (WNCN) — A North Carolina Central University sophomore was crowned Miss North Carolina on Saturday and will represent the state in the upcoming Miss America pageant.
Carrie Everett, who promotes the community service initiative “Building Community with Equity,” will receive $20,000 a year and a car from Knox Auto Sales in Dunn as the new Miss North Carolina. She will also receive $3,500 in scholarships during the pageant among other prizes.
“When I applied for the pageant this year, I only had $40 in my pocket,” Everett said. “This is the reality for many young women in this country. I believe in Miss America Opportunity and what it has done and will continue to do for young women like me. With this title, I am empowered and ready to drive a new culture of equality within the brand.”
Everett is the fourth black woman to win the title since the contest began in 1937.
