ROLESVILLE, N.C. (WNCN) — A pursuit involving a Wake County sheriff's deputy and a 19-year-old man ended in a fatal crash Sunday night when the suspect crashed into another vehicle north of Rolesville in northeast Wake County, according to authorities.
The incident was reported around 10 p.m., when a Wake County Sheriff's Office deputy attempted to stop a driver on Interstate 540 near US 401/Lewisburg Road north of Raleigh, according to a Wake County Sheriff's Office news release.
According to the North Carolina Highway Patrol, troopers attempted to stop the driver of a Nissan traveling at speeds exceeding 100 mph. The driver refused to stop and a pursuit ensued northbound on U.S. 401, where the suspect passed through the Rolesville area.
Police pursued the suspect to the area of US 401/Lewisburg Road and NC 96/Zebulon Road, where the driver crashed into another vehicle, a Toyota Camry.
The driver of the speeding Nissan, identified as 19-year-old Aidan Gambone of Wake Forest, died in the crash, and troopers say he was the only person in the vehicle.
The driver of the Camry, who was also the only passenger in the vehicle, suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to WakeMed Hospital, according to the Highway Patrol.
Two lanes of northbound U.S. 401 were immediately closed near N.C. 96, according to North Carolina Department of Transportation and Wake County officials. One lane reopened around 12:30 a.m. Monday, and the highway was cleared by 1:35 a.m. Monday, according to NCDOT.
The area where the incident occurred is about a half-mile from the Wake County/Franklin County line.
The North Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the crash, according to a spokesman for the Wake County Sheriff's Office.
