Part of the roof of a terminal at India's busiest airport collapsed early Friday during heavy thunderstorms and rain, injuring and trapping passengers and forcing the airport to suspend all departing flights from the terminal.
India's civil aviation minister said in a social media post that rescue efforts were underway and emergency responders were on the scene at Terminal 1 of New Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport. Airport authorities said the collapse occurred in the departures area of the terminal at around 5 a.m. local time and all departing flights from the terminal have been suspended. Terminal 1 handles domestic flights.
Part of the roof collapsed onto a pickup and drop-off area outside the terminal, crushing several vehicles, Press Trust of India reported, citing local fire officials. At least six people were injured, according to reports.
As of around 8 a.m., more than 600 flights departing from the airport were delayed and 17 were canceled, according to flight tracking site FlightAware.
The terminal was recently renovated and expanded to accommodate 40 million passengers a year, according to an airport news release.
This is a developing story.
