PITTSBORO, N.C. (WNCN) — The North Carolina Highway Patrol announced Sunday that a man has been charged after leading troopers on a multi-county chase that ended in an hours-long standoff.
The National Guard said they began the pursuit around 10:54 p.m. Saturday on Interstate 87 east of downtown Raleigh near Interstate 440. They did not say what prompted the pursuit.
When the vehicle failed to stop, the suspect continued west on Interstate 40 and took Exit 273 toward Chapel Hill, troopers said.
A PIT maneuver was attempted but failed to stop the vehicle, according to the Highway Patrol.
NCSHP said police lost sight of the suspect vehicle a short time later and called off the pursuit.
Officers said the suspect was spotted driving into a home on Cornwallis Street near downtown Pittboro sometime during the night.
Investigators say the man ran from the vehicle into the home and they tried unsuccessfully to get him outside.
NCSHP said the Chatham County Sheriff's Office and Pittsboro Police Department assisted in resolving the standoff.
Around 5 a.m., officers said they arrested a man, identified as 47-year-old Chad Vernon Clark.
No members of the public, suspects or officers were injured during the pursuit or arrest, authorities said.
Clark was taken to a hospital for a disability evaluation and then transported to the Wake County Jail, according to NCSHP.
He is charged with the following offences:
- A felon who flees to avoid arrest
- Speeding
- Reckless driving
- Driving with a revoked license
- Not paying attention to lights and sirens
NCSHP said additional charges are expected to be incurred.
