CHARLOTTE, N.C. — North Carolina leads the nation in the number of people bitten by both venomous and non-venomous snakes each year.
People can take some steps to avoid being bitten and learn how to treat a snake bite.
“A lot of the bites I see (in the emergency room) are from people who have been walking around barefoot in their yard or walking around in flip flops,” said Dr. Ben German, an emergency room physician at WakeMed in Raleigh.
German, a snake lover, said snakes only bite if they are startled or feel threatened, and he advised people to watch where they walk and be careful when picking up items from gardens.
