SHALLOTTE, N.C. (WNCN) — North Carolina's main license plate office is reopening along the coast after being closed for five months.
According to a news release from the North Carolina Department of Transportation, the contract with the previous operating company has ended and the Shallotte location will close on Dec. 20, 2023.
A new operator has been selected for the Brunswick County town and the license plate agency is expected to reopen at the same location later this week, officials said.
The location will remain at 5300 Main St. Suite A in Shallotte, right next to the North Carolina Driver's License Office.
While the office was closed, there was only one other location in Brunswick County that could serve the various beach towns and islands.
In North Carolina, the NCDMV oversees license plate agencies, which are managed by private companies or local governments.
These offices offer vehicle registration services and title transactions, as well as vehicle license plate renewals, tag replacements, disability placards, and duplicate registrations.
There are 123 license plate agencies operating throughout North Carolina. Harvey Godwin is the new operator of the Shallotte office, which is scheduled to reopen Thursday, officials said.
