RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — Severe thunderstorm watches have been issued for several counties in central North Carolina Sunday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service in Raleigh.

The weather service issued a warning for Granville, Halifax, Northampton, Person, Vance and Warren counties from just after 3:20 p.m. Sunday until 11 p.m. Mecklenburg County in southern Virginia is also under the warning.
Counties outside of central North Carolina under the watch include Bertie, Camden, Chowan, Currituck, Gates, Hartford, Pasquotank and Perquimans counties, according to the weather service.
Towns under severe thunderstorm watches include Creedmoor, Enfield, Henderson, Kittrell, Norlina, Oxford, Roanoke Rapids, Roxboro, Scotland Neck and Warrenton.
A severe thunderstorm watch is issued when conditions are favorable for severe thunderstorms to occur in or near the watch area.
By definition, severe thunderstorms are those that are accompanied by hail greater than or equal to one inch in diameter and/or winds greater than or equal to 58 miles per hour.
