In Saratoga Springs, New York, “Summer at the Spa,” a nearly 200-year-old tradition, is getting underway. On Saturday, the third race of the Triple Crown, the Belmont Stakes, will be held for the first time at Saratoga Race Course, a revered attraction where the elite and the rest mingle, but where horses take center stage.
Broadway, the city's main thoroughfare, was abuzz with activity. Lines formed before dawn for the racetrack's picnic tables. The track's new Belmont green color blended with the track's iconic red-and-white decor. Owners, trainers, fans and cooler-toting enthusiasts all welcomed the race's 156th running as it broke with tradition.
