The Secret Service shot a man near the White House early Sunday after a “armed conflict” with law enforcement officials, the agency said in a statement.
President Trump was not in the White House at the time. He spends weekends in Florida with his Mar-a-Lago club.
Earlier on Saturday, local police shared information with the Secret Service about suicides who may have traveled from Indiana to Washington. Around midnight, members of the Secret Service encountered the person's parking vehicle near 17th and F Streets, about a block from the White House. The man was outside the car, the agency said.
As officers approached, they saw the man holding a gun and then stated that the secret service had shot the man.
He was taken to hospital and his condition was unknown, the Secret Service said. No injuries were reported to anyone with Secret Service.
Washington's metropolitan police department is investigating the shooting.
