A U.S. Secret Service agent was robbed at gunpoint in Southern California last weekend, authorities said Monday, the same night President Joe Biden was in Los Angeles for a reelection fundraiser.
The Tustin Police Department said in a statement that officers were called to the Orange County housing development around 9:36 p.m. Saturday on a report of a possible robbery.
When police arrived at the development, a former military base, they discovered the victims were Secret Service agents who had been held at gunpoint and had their bags stolen, police said in a statement. One of the agents fired his gun during the robbery, police added.
The alleged robbery happened the night Biden was in downtown Los Angeles with former President Barack Obama for a star-studded reelection fundraiser. Celebrities in attendance included George Clooney, Julia Roberts and Barbra Streisand, and the Biden campaign said it raised at least $28 million.
It was not immediately clear whether Secret Service agents were guarding Biden or Obama in California. A police statement did not reveal the identities of the agents. The Tustin Police Department did not immediately respond to a request for clarification.
It was unclear how many suspects were involved or if anyone was injured during the shooting, and no suspects have been found, according to the statement. Police were able to find some of the agents' belongings in the area.
The U.S. Secret Service did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
