WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – Residents in North Carolina's Coastal Plain and Sandhills regions are asked to postpone outdoor burns due to continuing dry conditions, according to the North Carolina State Forest Service.
“Fine, unburned fuels burn quickly. Unattended fires may escape and spread rapidly. Wait until there is sufficient rain in the area before engaging in open burning,” the release states. “Your best defense against wildfire is yourself.”
New Hanover and Pender counties are echoing the N.C. Forest Service's warning.
“Please wait until significant rainfall has fallen in the area before burning!” Pender County Emergency Management said.
“New Hanover County Fire and Rescue should wait to begin outdoor burning until sufficient rainfall has been received by the NHC,” it added.
