On Monday, four officers were killed and four more were injured in a shootout as a team of law enforcement officers tried to serve a warrant on a suspect in Charlotte, North Carolina.
The gunfight left the suspect dead, making it one of the deadliest incidents for U.S. law enforcement in recent years.

What happened in Charlotte?
A group of officers from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department and the Federal Marshals Fugitive Task Force went to serve a warrant on the suspect around 1:30 p.m., according to a police statement. The suspect, later identified as Terry Clark Hughes Jr., 39, was wanted for being a felon in possession of a firearm and evading arrest.
As they approached the home, Hughes opened fire, striking several officers, police said. When the man came out of the house with a gun, officers determined he posed an “immediate and deadly threat” and shot him, police said. Mr Hughes was later pronounced dead in the front garden.
Police said officers received additional shots from inside the home. After a long standoff and negotiations, the two women came out of the house and were taken to the police station for questioning.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Chief Johnny Jennings said at a news conference that there were two shooters, including Hughes, and one of the weapons they used was a high-powered rifle.
Eight police officers were injured in the gunfight and taken to the hospital. Three people were pronounced dead on arrival, and another succumbed to his injuries on Monday night.
Officers came from multiple agencies.
Police said four members of the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force were shot, three of them fatally.
The task force was made up of personnel from multiple agencies. Those killed included Sam Poloche and Alden Elliott, two veterans of the North Carolina Department of Adult Corrections.
The U.S. Marshals Service confirmed that one of the deputy marshals was among the dead. The sheriff was not identified.

How often do shootings like this happen?
It was one of the deadliest recent attacks on US law enforcement.
In July 2016, an armed sniper opened fire during a demonstration against police shootings in downtown Dallas, killing four police officers and a transit officer. Police killed the perpetrator with explosives sent from a remote-controlled robot.
That same month, a gunman shot and killed three police officers and injured three others in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The gunman was killed during the shootout.
Chief Jennings said Monday's shooting was the most tragic in his more than 30 years with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.
