By plane and boat, on foot, on electric popemobile, Pope Francis celebrated the year of his Pope, reaching dozens of countries on five continents.
His first official trip to the outskirts of Rome was to Lampedusa, a small Mediterranean island that became the gateway to immigration in 2013. Shortly afterwards, he flew into the mountains of Bolivia, passing through the streets of Philadelphia and New York. He visited Mosul, an Iraqi city ruined by war, met crowds from South Sudan, the world's latest country, and crossed Asia and the Pacific, stopping in Mongolia, Indonesia and Papua New Guinea.
As his health became frail in the months of his death, his movements were increasingly restricted to smaller circles, and his humble residence was in the Vatican guesthouse at its central location. After his death on April 21, Vatican officials moved to prepare his body for their final journey: the funeral procession at the church where he will be buried as the 266th Pope.
