Here are some of the top news headlines we're watching heading into Memorial Day weekend. First, North Carolina State Police will be running two safety campaigns this Memorial Day weekend. During the “Fasten Your Seat Belt or Get a Ticket” campaign, extra officers will be on the lookout for drivers who aren't wearing their seat belts. They will also be promoting the Don't Drink and Drive campaign on the roads and waters, an effort to reduce alcohol-related accidents on our roads and waterways. Additional checkpoints are expected throughout the state through June 2. The season is in full swing. Many local spots will be opening starting tomorrow. Greensboro. Parks and Recreation. Swimming facilities will be open, including Warnervale Pool on Doak Street, Windsor Pool on East Gate City Boulevard, and spray grounds at Barber Park and Keeley Park. In the City of Greensboro, Lindley and Peeler report that “pools are closed for the season.” The city did not say why. Winston-Salem will also be opening its municipal pools this weekend. Pools at Bolton, Kimberly Park, Long Creek and Winston Waterworks will also open tomorrow.
Asheboro, North Carolina shooting suspect's parents arrested, police say
Asheboro police have arrested the parents of the 16-year-old shooting suspect, police said. As we reported, police said the fatal shooting happened on May 3. On Thursday, May 23, police obtained arrest warrants for the suspect's parents for helping their child evade arrest. Police located and arrested the mother, Denise Vera Covarrubias. She is charged with accessory after the fact. The father, Alfredo Martinez Ramirez, turned himself in. He is also charged with the same offense. The victim, 16-year-old Pedro Ortiz Perez, was shot in the jaw or neck area. He later died. Police previously arrested a teenage suspect in Statesville.
