Novant Hospital accused of sending sensitive patient data to Facebook's parent company; judge approves $6.6M settlement between hospital and patients
Normandy. Good morning. Thanks for joining us. I'm Star Connor and I'm here with my twin, Dylan Butler. We're twins. This morning. We're twins representing Chapel Hill. That's right, Carolina. It's a good day for the Tar Heels. They had a big win last night, but you were sleeping, right? You were sleeping. That's right. We can't stay up late watching baseball games and stuff, but we can give you the weather forecast. And unfortunately we had some bad news this morning. It's going to be hot and humid this afternoon. Thanks for watching. Of course, it's important to have this information when you expect these conditions. It's a good start to the day here at High Point University. There are high clouds overhead, but it's calmer outside and it feels a little bit more humid. Right now, it's 66 degrees in High Point. The rest of the region is getting closer to 60 degrees with dew points. The dew point temperature is about 5 degrees higher than yesterday. Yesterday, the dew point was in the 40s and 50s, and now it's 60 degrees. We'll be approaching 70 degrees. So we'll definitely see more moist air moving in from the west. We have clouds overhead right now, but the line of storms is weakening. Evacuate west for parts of Tennessee. This storm will move through southwest North Carolina in the next few hours, but we expect most of our area here in the Triad to be spared this early morning line of showers and storms. These storms won't necessarily get to our area, but we'll see clouds later. And as this front arrives this evening, we may see some scattered showers and storms late Sunday afternoon into the evening. Here's a future forecast showing about a 30% chance of rain in the east this afternoon into the evening. As the front moves through, it will start to clear overnight into Monday. But for now, it's a pretty hot, humid day, more like summer. We'll have the most chance of rain in the late afternoon and evening. Thunderstorms are also possible. Temperatures are rising quickly this morning, into the 80s.The weather is forecast to be good in a few minutes to start the work week. Okay, thanks, Dylan. It's 8:03 and there have been no arrests in the fatal shooting in Winston-Salem. Police responded to Northampton Drive around 1 a.m. Saturday. When officers arrived, they found Darren Lamont (Barnes Jr.) shot in the parking lot of Adams Market. Paramedics rushed the 33-year-old man to the hospital, where he died from his injuries. Detectives still don't have a suspect in the Greensboro group. Today they'll be searching for a mother who's been missing for almost six months. Marissa Carmichael was last seen at an ExxonMobil gas station on East Market Street on January 14. Investigators say they still don't have any leads on Marissa's whereabouts. A group is working to bring Marissa home and will meet on East Market Street this morning. They'll be handing out flyers in hopes of finding some clues. The widow of a local police officer is fighting to receive her late husband's compensation for his death. Cheryl McDonnell is scheduled to have her appeal heard on June 19 at the North Carolina Industrial Commission, the state agency that oversees workers' compensation law. A single commissioner who heard her case in February 2023 denied her claim. Her husband, Winston-Salem Police Sergeant Mike McDonnell, died on October 21, 2021. According to his death certificate, the cause of death was COVID-19, and McDonnell believes he contracted the virus from a coworker while working at the Carolina Classic Fair. The city of Winston-Salem argues that it cannot be proven that he was infected while on the job. Moreover, because he was not vaccinated, his death does not meet the definition of an industrial accident. In a statement to WXII 12, McDonnell said the initial denial of the claim was disappointing, adding, “It would be good for Mike's son to have as much support as possible after losing his father. It just doesn't seem right to deny him equal access to justice.” Sergeant McDonald's death has been classified as a line-of-duty death at the federal and state levels, and COVID-19 was by far the leading cause of police officer deaths in 2021, according to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund. This week is North Carolina Safety Action Week. Atrium Health, Wake Forest Baptist and other community organizations teamed up to hold a free Keep Your Kids Safe event in Winston-Salem yesterday. Let's take a look. We want to make sure our kids are safe. That's the message of Saturday's NC Safety event. Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist and other community members have been handing out free gun locks, life jackets and even bike helmets to keep kids safe this summer. I think the helmets are great, especially. I'm okay with anything with wheels. We are the type of moms who wear helmets, so we're excited to see that they're giving out a bunch of helmets for free. According to the North Carolina Department of Public Safety, guns are now the leading cause of injury deaths for children and teens in the state. Every year, a lot of kids are brought in. Well, especially throughout the year. Unfortunately, we have gun violence. We have a lot of kids who end up in the hospital, in surgery, or just going through events that are very frightening for their families because of gun violence. The way to store your gun safely is with a gun lock. And luckily, we have free gun locks here for all times. We hear a lot of stories about kids getting into accidents, whether it's water or head injuries or gunshot wounds, but it's really important that we have access to things that can help keep our kids safe. You know, through these free gun locks, we can avoid events that are never inevitable.
