VANCEBORO, N.C. (WNCT) — April is nationally recognized as Military Child Month. It's his 30-day celebration of military children, both here and abroad, and recognition of the unique challenges they face.
According to the U.S. Department of Defense, more than 1.6 million children have parents in the military. Christopher Whitfield, a student at West Craven Middle School, is one of them. He hasn't seen his mother since June.
On Friday, Christopher's mother, Army Sergeant Trinity Whitfield, worked with Craven County Schools to surprise Christopher and return to the United States.
“I know it's hard because I'm separated from my parents, and it's hard for me to be separated from my baby,” Trinity said.
