A group representing black residents of a small North Carolina county has filed a federal lawsuit against local officials, seeking the removal of a 122-year-old monument honoring “loyal slaves” outside a courthouse.
A 23-foot-tall statue of a Confederate soldier has stood outside the Tyrrell County Courthouse in Columbia, North Carolina, since 1902. The zinc statue sits on a pedestal bearing a bust of Robert E. Lee and the inscription, “With Gratitude to Our Faithful Slaves.”
