NEWTON, N.C. (Queen City News) — A man with a lengthy criminal history shot and killed a woman early Tuesday morning before opening fire on officers, according to Newton police.
Police were treating a shooting victim in the parking lot of the Marketplace Shopping Center when 33-year-old Jamar Robinson allegedly began firing at police.
Police said around midnight Tuesday, the woman called 911 seeking help. Police said she left the Catawba County Government Center and was found in the parking lot of a Planet Fitness about two miles from the government center.
When police, fire and emergency responders arrived, Robinson drove into the parking lot and began firing shots in the area where officers were present, authorities said. Officers returned fire, shooting and killing Robinson.
In 2021, Robinson was acquitted of murder charges related to a shooting death in Hickory in 2015. He also had multiple open cases in multiple counties across the area, ranging from speeding to reckless driving.
“It is unfortunate that an officer had to lose his own life to save several others. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the officers, the victim and others affected by this senseless act of violence. Domestic violence remains a serious issue that must be addressed immediately,” Newton Police Chief Vidal Sipe said in a statement.
The chief offered the Family Guidance Center as a resource.
“Unfortunately, this is probably a fact of life in our community and we're working every day to correct it,” said Robert Dalton, executive director of the Family Guidance Center.
Dalton said the organization offers a range of services to victims of domestic violence, including a 24-hour crisis line and shelters for those in need.
“Sometimes people don't know who to call or where to go, and that's why we're always here willing to help people,” Dalton said.
The officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave pending the results of an investigation.
