A North Carolina man won more than $800,000 in the lottery after his sister told him she dreamed of being rich.
Kannapolis resident David Atwell won $837,187 in the Cash 5 drawing Saturday night on a $1 ticket purchased at a local Jiffy Quick, the North Carolina Education Lottery announced.
“I was surprised,” he said. “At first I thought someone had won because I saw the jackpot go down to his $100,000. I had no idea it was me.”
However, his sister had a hunch that good fortune would be in his future.
“In her dream, I found gold nuggets,” he recalled. “I believe dreams will definitely come true.”
Atwell added that her family “always said I was the luckiest.”
After learning he had won, he said, “I screamed so hard it scared the cat.''
He accepted his winnings Monday at Lottery headquarters in Raleigh.
Atwell said she took home a total of $598,591 after taxes, which she plans to use to pay bills and donate to her church.
