RALEIGH, N.C. (WRAL) — The North Carolina Senate made a last-minute effort to pass a legalization bill Monday in the final days of the 2024 legislative session, sending the toughest proposal yet on medical marijuana to the state House for final approval.
The Senate has passed a medical marijuana bill each of the past three years, each time with broad support from both parties. But after the House refused to bring the bill to a vote in 2022 and 2023, Senate Republican leadership is trying to win more support in a third attempt. The Senate approved a key change on Monday: a ban on recreational use of marijuana in North Carolina in the future, even if the federal government legalizes it nationwide.
