Police in Asheville, North Carolina, have upgraded charges against a man accused of assaulting and later killing a man as he crossed the street, authorities announced Monday. Samantha Booth with the Asheville Police Department announced that detectives have charged Tyler Koenraz, 24, with additional charges. He was charged with second-degree murder in the Feb. 29 death of Gregory William Martin, 73. Booth said Martin was crossing Heywood Road near Craven Street and there was tape on the hood of his stopped vehicle. She said Koenraz got out of the car and pushed Martin to the ground. After the assault, Koenraz returned to his car and drove away. Martin suffered severe head injuries and was taken to Mission Hospital for treatment, where he later died on March 12. (Watch the video above.) Koenraaz turned himself in to police on March 8 and was initially charged with assault causing serious bodily injury. After an investigation and findings from the State Medical Examiner's Office, as well as consultation with the Buncombe County District Attorney's Office, Tyler Koenraz was criminally charged with second-degree murder, Booth said. Koenraz is currently being held in the Buncombe County Detention Center without bail. .
