The nonprofit organization Samaritan's Purse is expanding its emergency response efforts for victims of Hurricane Beryl, focusing on Grenada, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and Jamaica. The organization has sent more than 50,000 pounds of supplies to these areas, including shelters, tarps, and hygiene kits. Samaritan's Purse currently has more than 50 volunteers in the Caribbean, and it's been making crime headlines. Two men and five juveniles have been charged with multiple crimes in Winston-Salem. Police say the investigation involves suspected gang members and their associates. Juan Noyola, 19, is facing numerous charges, including assault with a deadly weapon. There are also multiple warrants for the arrest of 18-year-old David Oliveira, including possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Oliveira's identification photo from his arrest was not released, and four of the five juveniles arrested were reportedly given protective orders. New details emerged in court in a year-long child sexual assault case in Guilford County, where suspect Marvin Glenn was arrested in 2021. The charges date back several years, and prosecutors say the case was closed when the child denied anything happened. However, the District Attorney's Office said the child began having panic attacks from the trauma several years later. And that's when she told her parents what had happened. Glenn is in jail without bail. It's happening now in Davie County. Construction of a new roundabout is underway to improve traffic flow at a busy intersection. Farmington Road at U.S. Highway 158 near Mocksville will be closed until August 2. Detours have been posted due to this construction. DOT says the roundabout is much needed in a high-traffic, congested area with both Davie County High School and North Davie Middle School nearby. There are other nearby roundabouts, so there is little doubt the roundabout needs to be built. It is on the interstate. Davie County Schools says the roundabout will ease congestion during peak school hours, enhance safety for students and parents, and community bus traffic for summer programs has been rerouted to avoid the intersection. Once the closure begins. In Alamance County, the Department of Transportation will change the intersection to a full road closure today. This will be done at the intersection of the Altamaha Union Bridge and Page Town Road in north Burlington. Workers say the change will reduce the risk of collisions at the intersection this afternoon. Stokes County has a new county commissioner. County commissioners voted last night to hire Jeff Sanborn. He beat out two other applicants for the job. Sanborn has been mayor of Pinehurst since 2015, and before that served in the U.S. Army for 27 years, serving as garrison commander at Liberty. Sanborn will be the first Stokes County mayor on September 18. Pressure is mounting as Democrats call for him to pass the baton to President Biden.
