Police shoot and kill man with pizza cutter in Nash County, North Carolina, authorities say
Police in Forsyth County have charged a man with battery and assault. Police found Preston Fansler shot at a home on Gum Tree Road. It was around 1:00 this morning. Police say Fansler and another person shot each other during a fight at the rally. Fansler sustained minor injuries. The other person was uninjured, police said. Police also say Fansler assaulted a woman at the same rally. The woman's condition is unknown. A now-former Rockingham County Detention Center officer has been charged. After an investigation that began earlier this year, sheriff's deputies arrested Nerita Davis-Barnett on suspicion of giving contraband to an inmate. The sheriff's office said she was fired in March. Details of what she allegedly gave to the inmate were not released. The University of North Carolina Board of Trustees voted to repeal diversity, equity and inclusion policies across the state's public university campuses. The vote comes after the UNC Chapel Hill campus moved to cut diversity programs last week, with the university's board of trustees reallocating more than $2 million in DEI funds to campus safety programs. All board members voted in favor of eliminating the system's policies, but two members voted against. This means that various DEI positions across the university system are at risk of being cut. 3 While this measure certainly amends university rules related to DEI, it does not weaken our university's commitment to diversity and inclusion. Chowan strives to achieve equality and equity, to be a place where everyone is welcome and everyone feels they belong. The change affects all 17 campuses, including the University of North Carolina, Winston-Salem, and North Carolina A&T. Late this afternoon, the ACLU of North Carolina released a statement opposing the decision, saying, “This move sends a disturbing message about how serious our university city is about protecting students' rights to be free from discrimination.” End of quote, the new lawsuit could change how concert tickets are sold and upend the live entertainment industry. The Department of Justice joins state attorneys general in antitrust lawsuit against Live Nation and Ticketmaster. More from Washington with Alice Barr. Like the lyrics of Taylor Swift's song, it's time to break them up. The Department of Justice has filed a lawsuit seeking to break up Ticketmaster and its parent company Live Nation, arguing that their monopoly practices in the live entertainment industry are anticompetitive and illegal. No price gouging. This comes after years of consumer complaints about soaring ticket prices, high fees and technical issues, including a chaotic 2022 Taylor Swift ticket sales that forced fans to wait hours online. We didn't use the bathroom, we didn't eat, and it even led to a Senate hearing. I think there's a big problem with a company that controls 980% of ticket sales for the Billboard Top 40 and sporting events. U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland, along with attorneys general from 30 states and districts, are charging that Live Nation Ticketmaster is illegally squashing competition to monopolize not only ticket sales, but also concert venue ownership, artist management and concert promotion. As a result, fans pay more, artists get fewer opportunities to play concerts and smaller promoters are squeezed out. Live Nation says the Justice Department's lawsuit ignores key factors, including rising production costs, the growing popularity of artists and 24 Over Seven's online ticket resales. It calls the allegations baseless and argues that the company offers fans, artists and venues better prices and better service than if these complementary businesses were separated in Washington.
