I grew up vacationing in a beach town called Nags Head on the Outer Banks, a chain of barrier islands off the coast of North Carolina. So did my parents – they were high school sweethearts – and hitchhiked to Nags Head as teenagers in the 1960s to watch bands like The Drifters play at local dance halls. The story of my parents seeing it had become a legend in my mind. As a kid in the '80s, I loved climbing the giant dunes at nearby Jockey's Ridge State Park and fishing at Cape Hatteras. So I was excited to learn this month that Steidl would be publishing a book of photos by photographer Joel Sternfeld of his summer 1975 Nags Head shoots. Sternfeld's weather-beaten cottages and roadside snack bars evoke memories both real and imagined. Reliving them with his mother. The book is available for pre-order now, so in the meantime, we're considering some of his other 70s-inspired gifts for Mother's Day. Vacation's Orange Gelée sunscreen is reminiscent of the vintage sunscreen classic Bain de Soleil. Also, this portable wine chiller designed by Richard Carlson in 1978 can be easily found on eBay. Holds 2 wine bottles. Or, his 2 milligrams of THC-infused Cann Social Tonic zero-proof flowy pouches are easy to take to the beach. If you're looking for a nostalgic summer pant set, look no further than Rockaway Beach-based Zingara Vintage. Designer Erin Silvers custom-crafted ZingaraTerry loungewear using vintage YSL towels produced from the 1960s through his '70s.

Fashion designer Ulla Johnson talks about ikebana essentials
New York-based fashion designer Ulla Johnson will launch a five-piece ikebana kit next week in collaboration with British Japanese home and gardening brand Niwaki. Ikebana, which Johnson learned during the 2020 coronavirus lockdown, is a minimalist style of flower arranging that dates back to 6th century Japan. Four years after she started this habit, Johnson still arranges flowers in her Brooklyn backyard as often as possible. “Every day I gather as many stems and branches from the garden as I can to bring light and life into my home,” she says. Her collection with Niwaki includes wisteria rattan-wrapped pruners (hand pruners), shallow vases handcrafted by Japanese potter Yo Tom, and garden decorations made from Ulla Johnson's shibori fabric. It includes flower arranging essentials such as an apron, which also frequently appears in her ready-to-wear pieces. I wear clothes. The Ulla Johnson x Niwaki flower arrangement collection will go on sale May 6th at Johnson's New York and Los Angeles boutiques, as well as Niwaki's London flagship store, where Johnson will display a window installation designed by florist Frieda Kim.
Packed with delicious scents and nourishing ingredients, this bar soap turns hand-washing (or showering) into a fun part of your daily routine. New York-based brand Soft Service recently launched Green Banana Buff His Bar, packed with microcrystals to soften skin and scrub away flakes to thoroughly cleanse. The aroma is bright, green, and slightly sweet, like a freshly peeled, unripe version of its namesake fruit. Long Island-based company Terratory's seasonal Wild Heirloom Tomato and Sweet Basil Soap is made with pureed vitamin C-rich tomatoes sourced from local farmers markets, sweet basil oil, and coarsely ground black It uses pepper and nettle leaves, which have anti-inflammatory properties. The grass-like, voluminous cubic shape looks elegant when placed on a soap dish or hung by the bath. Another visual treat for him is his DS and Durga striped pistachio-glycerin soap, made by Maine soap and candle maker Wally Myers. The nostalgic pink and green bars are unabashedly sweet-smelling and would look great in an Italian bakery showcase.
double duty
candle in carved container
A candle in a striking, reusable container is two gifts in one. Once the wax melts, the container becomes a sculptural catchall, vase, or mug. Ferm Living's Urasoy Wax Candles come in his three calming scents of lemongrass, fig, and chamomile and are presented in a terracotta container with a lid. For a more ornate option, Arquiste's Friend of the Night candles are housed in enamel clay vases from Michoacan designed by his two Mexico City-based studios, Marva and Surco. The candle's tuberose and sugarcane notes were developed by Rodrigo Flores Roux, a Mexican perfumer who has also created fragrances for Clinique and Tom His Ford. Indonesian design studio Marloe Marloe offers mini bobby candles. The Mini Bobby Candle is a smaller option (approximately 4 and a half inches tall) with the company's signature grainy lava texture. The container contains beeswax blended with the brand's leather and amber scents, with notes of green leaves, thyme and lemon completed by sandalwood. In their latest collaboration, released in April, fragrance brand Liis and ARC Objects designer Daniela Jacobs collaborated on Liis' two newest scents, In This World (with notes of blood orange, lavender, and tonka wood) and Ethereal Wave. We created a hand-carved porcelain container filled with. (bergamot, white tea, velvet musk). For mothers who prefer nautical hues, there's London-based brand Austin, a collaboration between her Austin and ceramist Matthew Rowe. With top notes of Cedar Atlas and Ylang Ylang, their candles are housed in hand-soaked glossy cobalt vessels.

personalized engraved gold pendant
When Caitlin Mosian introduced a line of hollow charms made to hold hair, ashes, and small notes, she joined a new wave of designers rethinking keepsake and mourning jewelry. Now, the Brooklyn-based jeweler is considering another way to keep artifacts cherished with a new custom line called Memento, which features line drawings, signatures, phrases, and symbols etched into pendants.
Mosiun came up with the idea six years ago when she designed a pendant for her husband as a wedding gift. The process of working with her artisans to transform her portraits into photo-etchings turned out to be literally a labor of love, and (for now) too difficult to offer to customers. She was looking for a way to simplify the process. One employee knew someone who had an antique locket that was a reproduction of a piece of paper with “I Love You” engraved in her mother's handwriting. It was that notion of recreating more everyday, intimate moments of life, rather than elaborate works of art, that helped the designer shape her concept. Memento's process takes approximately 6 weeks and begins with the client submitting an image, which is then formatted and mocked up for placement in the gold pendant, which comes in both oval and round shapes. . The design is engraved using a laser engraving machine. “It's great to have a physical reminder of your emotions,” Mociun says. “That's why I wear jewelry and why I love making jewelry. It's perfect for my idea of a walking altar.”

Egg cup that makes breakfast fun
My mom more often makes what she calls a “one-pan wonder,” something like a frittata dotted with eggs, leftover vegetables, and goat cheese, than a set of soft-boiled eggs, but still I I would like to buy the following items for my mother. Stylish egg cups that are often seen these days. French-American designer Sophie Lou Jacobsen created the lace glass version with the idea of giving “the classic egg cup and the egg itself the attention and grandeur that each deserves,” she says. . Jacobsen also envisioned this container being used as a holder for shot glasses and cocktail picks. A more minimalist yet quirky piece is the Kerry Egg Cup by Ai Aspdin, a Thai potter based in West Sussex, England. With its smooth oval shape and pastel colors, it looks like the kind of car an egg would drive at Easter. Also perfect for the spring table are Astied Villatte's Marguerite His Egg His cup, with its wavy edges and the Parisian workshop's characteristic white glaze. When not in use at breakfast, it could be a storage place for olive seeds or a vase for dahlias that deserve their own stage.

Handmade makeup brushes with colorful wooden handles
Using vibrant woods from around the world, including green horse chestnut burl from the United States, golden sapele from Nigeria, and dark ebony from Asia, British brush maker and woodworker Lucinda Goulden created her home in Wiltshire two years ago. I started making makeup brushes. Her blending brushes, powder brushes, and bronzer brushes are influenced by her previous training as a make-up artist, thanks to bristles made from locally sourced goat hair. It provides a decadent and skin-friendly feel. If you gently clean it monthly, your brushes will last for years. “We wanted to create an heirloom-quality makeup brush that was also a functional piece of art,” says Golden. To add a special touch, some of her designs are embedded with semi-precious tourmaline and amethyst stones.
Bangkok- and London-based jewelery designer Patcharavipa Bodhiratnankula owes her love for jewelery to her mother, Sanhapit Sampathithiri, who designed her own pieces as a hobby. In 2016, Bodhi Ratnan Ngukula launched her line of fine jewellery, 'Pacharavipa', which includes her rings carved from coconut shells and her 18 carat Siam rings in her trademark molten style. She sold pieces such as her chain link drop earrings made of gold. In addition to her couture line of fine jewelry and high jewelry, Bodhiratnankula and her partner Kenji Herremann rework 10 to 15 of her vintage watches a year, often adding decorative bezels or Original bracelets are modified and sometimes made into rings. The next set includes 10 styles, including a 1980s Piaget redesigned with a black crocodile strap and a yellow gold Roman-style molded bezel. Another contemporary designer who offers modified vintage watches is New York-based Jade Trou. Her first foray into watches included six restored Rolex Cellinis from the '70s. Each remake has a different color and unique details. The all-black version with an 18K gold vintage-style bezel features tiny diamonds as hour markers. If your mom prefers bolder hues, there's a version with a crimson dial framed by cobblestone-set diamonds and a matching strap, one of Trau's signature settings. .
