Michael Cohen, a former lawyer and former President Donald Trump's fixer, is testifying today in a New York hush money trial. Prosecutors allege Trump falsified his business records to repay Cohen for payments to former adult film star Stormy Daniels. Alice Barr reports on former President Trump's first criminal trial, which culminated today with testimony from the prosecution. Central witness, former Trump lawyer Michael Cohen. Cohen, once Mr. Trump's fixer and ardent defense lawyer, and now the lynchpin of the prosecution's case, is a former adult film star at Mr. Trump's direction and for his benefit. that he paid Stormy Daniels to keep quiet about her alleged affair with Trump. Trump denies all claims made by the former president. I'm innocent. This is a political witch hunt. Mr. Cohen testified as follows. Trump was extremely concerned about the impact the stormy Daniels saga would have on voters in the weeks before the 2016 election and in the aftermath of the infamous Access Hollywood tape, and Cohen said Trump The former president said, quote, just be careful, and said that, “Women are going to hate me.” People will think it's cool, but this will be a disaster for the campaign. Michael Cohen is the first witness who was able to actually get Donald Trump into the room over and over again, but Michael Cohen is also a problematic witness. He was convicted of campaign finance violations and lying to Congress and served time on federal charges related to payments to Daniels. Trump's legal team claims that Cohen is hell-bent on retaliating against his former boss and that he cannot be trusted. His testimony is supported by evidence documenting how former President Trump reimbursed Mr. Cohen with invoices and checks marked for legal fees; Prosecutors allege that he paid. They claim that these are actually hush-money payments and cover-up allegations, which amount to the crime of falsifying business records. In Washington, Alice Barr, NBC News. And tonight, a vigil will be held to honor our nation's heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice for their communities. The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund will hold a candlelight vigil tonight to pay tribute and remember the officers who died in the line of duty last year. This is all part of National Police Week. WXII 12 Kenny Beck is in Washington DC ahead of a vigil. Hello, Kenny. Hello to both of you. We're actually right next to the National Mall here in Washington, DC. We are at the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial itself. Tonight's candlelight vigil, he's about a 15 minute walk from where we are, which is now the mall itself. It's empty. But we're hearing that families and their loved ones, as well as members of law enforcement and those taken to hotels in the area, will begin leaving for events here within the hour. So after I've talked to you guys here, I'm going to move over there for a second. The reason we are at this monument now is because this is a very crowded place all afternoon. We strive to maintain a respectful distance from mourners. There were a lot of people here, some of them arm in arm. There are many flowers and other things left on the walls. What you probably can't see from our video are all the names. More than 24,000 of his names are inscribed on the walls here. Each of these represents a fallen man or woman in law enforcement. That 24,000 includes two members of the Piedmont Triad that were lost within the last year. Calendar Year 2023, Sergeant Dale Nix of the Greensboro Police Department and Deputy Austin Riddlehuber of the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office. Riddlehuber, just 32 years old, died in a car accident in Davidson County in the middle of the night in September. And mr. Nix was shot and killed in Colfax during a confrontation with a group of people suspected of stealing from area convenience stores. We have seen many pass through. We have seen many people with red and tearful eyes for obvious reasons. I saw a lot of people etching their names on the walls in blue crayon. Fittingly, it's the beginning of National Police Week here in the nation's capital. Of course, we'll be bringing you all the sights and sounds associated with this powerful opening night tonight from 10pm on Triad CW on WXII 12 from Washington, D.C., throughout the evening. So we'll wrap it all up tonight at 11 o'clock. For now, we'll be broadcasting live from the nation's capital on KENNY BECK WXII 12 News. Thank you, Kenny. And this National Police Week, several organizations are paying tribute to police officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice. The PGA Tour honored four fallen military officers over the weekend in Charlotte.
