The 3.9 magnitude earthquake caused mild shaking in and near Los Angeles' Hollywood area late Sunday, according to the US Geological Survey.
The earthquake struck Burbank, a city in Los Angeles County, about nine miles deep at 10pm local time. The agency said on its website.
The epicenter was more than a mile east-southeast of North Hollywood, several miles north of Dolby Theatre, the venue for the Academy Awards on Sunday night.
It has been more than 30 years since California suffered a devastating earthquake. Scientists say this period of silence in this earthquake is inevitably crushed by the late “big things.”
For some Los Angeles area residents, the scattering of small earthquakes last year amplified the underlying fear that the main ones may be turning corners. Others didn't pay much attention.
