The magnitude 7.4 earthquake that hit Taiwan on Wednesday morning was the strongest in 25 years, Taiwan's Central Weather Bureau announced.
At least one person has been killed in an earthquake off Taiwan's east coast, and the number is expected to rise, officials said.
Here we take a look back at some of the major earthquakes in Taiwan's modern history.
Taichung, 1935
Taiwan's worst earthquake recorded magnitude 7.1 and occurred near the island's west coast in April 1935, killing more than 3,200 people, according to the Central Weather Bureau. More than 12,000 people were injured and more than 50,000 homes were destroyed or damaged.
Tainan, 1941
A magnitude 7.3 earthquake struck southwestern Taiwan in December 1941, killing hundreds of people, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
Chichi, 1999
In September 1999, a magnitude 7.6 earthquake occurred in central Taiwan, killing approximately 2,500 people. The earthquake, which occurred about 90 miles south-southwest of Taipei, was the second deadliest in Taiwan's history, according to the USGS and the Central Weather Bureau. More than 10,000 people were injured and more than 100,000 homes were destroyed or damaged.
Yujin, 2016
In February 2016, a magnitude 6.4 earthquake collapsed a 17-story apartment building in southwestern Taiwan, killing at least 114 people. The USGS later announced that 90 earthquakes of similar magnitude or larger had occurred within 250 kilometers (155 miles) of the quake's location over the past 100 years.
