NC chooses which direction to pay taxes
In this week's Wall Street Journal, the paper's editorial board said North Carolina will reach a crossroads on taxes this November.
“Democratic gubernatorial candidates want to restore limited taxpayer benefits rather than accelerate the path to lower income tax rates that have boosted the state's overall economy.”
“North Carolina has lowered its income tax several times over the past decade, from 7.75% in 2013 to 4.5% now and 3.99% starting in 2026. Leading states such as South Carolina (6.5%) and Virginia (5.75%) also lowered their corporate tax rates from 6.9% to 2.5%, with plans to drop to 1% by 2028. ”
“Politicians like to give voters and corporations certain tax breaks because it makes them accountable. Mr. Stein wants to play this tax redistribution game, but voters You'll see that lowering everyone's tax rate will yield positive results.”

Another year, another budget left over.
Speaking of taxes, this week also brought news that North Carolina has a $1 billion budget surplus.
“General Assembly economists currently project that collections will exceed the budgeted budget by $413 million, or a 1.2% increase, for the year ending June 30 and for the fiscal year beginning July 1. The state's coffers would be $1 billion higher than expected, or an increase of 3%.
Senate Majority Leader Paul Newton of Cabarrus County said Wednesday that the report shows “Republicans are leading the state in the right direction, balancing the needs of our residents, educators, job creators and people who want to relocate.” This reaffirms that.” They can accomplish more — they're coming to North Carolina. ”
