Police said at least one person was killed Sunday after gunshots exploded at a family barbecue in Houston, and several others were in danger.
Officers received a call reporting the shooting just before 1am local time on Cherry Hill Avenue in the city's southeastern part of the city, Houston Police Department Assistant Patricia Cantu said.
Officers arrived minutes later, finding an ongoing shootout and multiple casualties. They moved to a nearby Jack in the Box restaurant, where they were evaluated and taken to the hospital.
Filming began after midnight when “uninvited guests” arrived at the family gathering, Chief Cantu said at an early morning press conference on Sunday. After being asked to leave, those who were not invited began shooting, and residents returned the fire, she said.
“No one who did this was invited, asked to leave, and he began a shooting incident,” Chief Cantu said.
Police said at least 14 people were injured along with the fatal one. Some of those wounds were in serious condition and had undergone surgery, Chief Cantu added.
Police have not yet arrested the suspect and refused to identify it. Several people were detained “for information,” Chief Cantu said.
