Ukraine's return to the border before 2014 is a “unrealistic goal” and a “fantastic goal” for peace between Ukraine and Russia that President Trump wants to achieve, says U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete -Hegses said at a NATO meeting in Brussels on Wednesday.
At the first meeting with NATO and Ukrainian defense ministers, Hegses told them that Trump “will end this war by bringing both diplomacy and Russia and Ukraine to the table.”
However, it argues that in order for Ukraine to regain all its territory before 2014, it must argue that “it will only extend the war and cause more suffering.”
“We will only establish durable peace by ending this devastating war and combining the strength of the alliance with a realistic assessment of the battlefield,” he said.
Hegses told the meeting that he expects Trump to take more financial and military responsibility for Ukraine's defense.
Europe has to take more responsibility for traditional defense and spend more money on up to 5% of its citizen producers as the US deals with its own security risks and China's challenges. He said he wouldn't.
Trump added that he does not support Ukraine's NATO membership as part of a realistic peace plan.
