A loud explosion was heard over the Ukrainian capital Kiev early Saturday morning as authorities warned of an incoming ballistic missile.
Immediately after the air raid warning was lifted, a thud was heard throughout the city at 5:50 a.m. local time. A few seconds later, the air raid siren started blaring.
The country's air defense systems are functioning, the city's mayor, Vitali Klitschko, wrote on Telegram, warning of the missile threat and urging residents to remain in shelters.
Shortly after, he said emergency services were responding to the scene of the fire. The city's local military authorities announced that four people were killed.
Both sides in the nearly three-year war, which began with Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, have stepped up attacks in recent weeks.
This is a developing story.
