A Reddit post warns people to double-check a locksmith's credentials before making an appointment.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — If you were locked out of your home, who would be the first person you would call? Probably a locksmith, but are all locksmiths created equal?
It can be difficult to vet a locksmith's qualifications before making a call, but that's exactly what some people do after having a bad experience. Their post on Reddit encourages people to take a moment to double-check the locksmith's background and qualifications. Users also claim that they need a license to operate a locksmith business in North Carolina, is that true?

According to North Carolina law, locksmiths in North Carolina “have the knowledge and tools to bypass or disable security devices in vehicles, homes, and businesses” and must be properly licensed.
The Tar Heel State is required to maintain a state license to protect public health, safety, and welfare. Naama Ben Shabat, owner of AKM Locksmith, said this is a good requirement for both the state and customers who need assistance entering locked premises.
“You need to know who they are, what they're like, what their background is,” Shabat says. “Do they have any felonies or misdemeanors? You need to know a little more about the person before you give them access to your life.”
If you are looking for a locksmith in your area, the North Carolina Locksmith Licensing Board has a public database listing all available licensed locksmiths. The database displays the license number, expiration status, date, and any disciplinary actions taken against them.

South Carolina is a different story. Although no license is required to operate in the Palmetto State, all locksmiths must register with the Department of Labor.
If you're looking for a locksmith you can trust, there are various associations that can help, such as the South Carolina Locksmith Association. Shabat said it should raise red flags if an unlicensed locksmith attempts to travel from South Carolina to North Carolina.
“You shouldn’t do that, no,” Shabat said.
